Sérgio Ivan Lopes (BSc’04, MSc’09, PhD’14, PGdip’18) is currently a researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações and Assistant Professor at the Technology and Management School of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (ESTG-IPVC) where he occupies the position of director of the undergraduate course in Networks and Computer Systems Engineering (ERSC). He graduated in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering, has an M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering, a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management. In 2007, he has been awarded the Texas Instruments ESPA – Excellence in Signal Processing Award, and in 2015, he has been awarded the First Prize of the Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge (Ph.D. category), a distinction that rewards research of practical utility. Since 2005, he has been collaborating in several R&D projects and co-authored more than 60 scientific publications. In 2016, he joined the Expert Panel of the European Commission, being engaged in the evaluation of the call ICT-01-2016: Smart Cyber-Physical Systems. Recently, he has been the General-Chair at the Edge-IoT 2020 – International Conference on Intelligent Edge Processing in the IoT Era. He is an IEEE Senior Member (S’11–M’15–SM’20), and his research interests include embedded and cyber-physical systems, edge computing, digital signal processing, and indoor positioning. When not working he enjoys traveling, digging records, and playing with analog synths.
