Sérgio I. Lopes (BSc’04, MSc’09, PhD’14, PGdip’18) is currently a researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações and Assistant Professor at the Technology and Management School of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (ESTG-IPVC) where he occupies the position of director of the undergraduate course in Networks and Computer Systems Engineering (ERSC). He graduated in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering, has a M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering, a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, and has a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management. In 2007 he was awarded the ESPA-Excellence in Signal Processing Award, given by Texas Instruments, and in 2015 he has been awarded the First Prize (Ph.D. category) of the Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge, a distinction that rewards research of practical utility. Since 2005, he has been working as an R&D Engineer in several research projects and co-authored more than 50 scientific publications. He has been an IEEE member since 2011, and in 2016 he has joined the Expert Panel of the European Commission, being engaged in the evaluation of the call ICT-01-2016: Smart Cyber-Physical Systems. Currently, his research interests include embedded and cyber-physical systems, edge computing, digital signal processing, and indoor positioning. When not working he enjoys traveling, digging records and playing with analog synths.
